Bringing Your WebSite Out Of The Last Century

The web is a new medium, and opens up avenues of communication with customers around the world. It's a medium for artistic expression, and allows you to express a sense of personal style. When the Web was new, a decade ago, that sense of style was cobbled together from all kinds of things, and has resulted in some old practices that should be abandoned, and have a stake driven through their hearts.

First and foremost, remember that the T in HTML is for TEXT. Unless it's your company logo, never use graphics of words. This is important for a number of reasons. First, text can be selected and copied and pasted by your visitors. Graphic headers cannot. Second, your graphical headers won't change size to match whatever resolution your target's browser is set up for, while a font based system will. Third, a lot of browsers still give the option to shut off graphics, particularly those used on mobile devices, to save on download bandwidth.

While we're speaking on graphical design for your web site, resist the urge to use fancy fonts. Your site is meant to be read; there are several fonts that are designed to be read on-screen with minimum eye strain, among them Georgia, Verdana and MS Times New Roman. Similarly, to make your life easier, be sure to set your fonts in a cascading style sheet, or CSS file. This allows you to make one change to a font list and have it affect all the fonts on your web site - most modern web design tools will handle the CSS stuff for you; how much you want to get into it is up to you.

CSS is also a great way to avoid two other common sins of web design from the late '90s: The use of needless tables and tiled backgrounds, usually in garish colors. CSS allows you to specify backgrounds that flow around text, without choking the browser on tables and the like. While it was the rage in web site design to make your page look like it was printed on parchment, with a tiled background, it's certainly not the way to go now. Most web pages should have either a light gray, white or "gray blue" background, because that's the easiest for text to be read from. While it's very chic, try to avoid white text on a black background. If you must use a dark background, use text that's somewhat larger against it, because of the way optical illusions work with text on a dark background.

Avoid animated GIFs and the Blink tag. The things Animated GIFs did are better handled with CSS and Javascript rollovers, and again, most good web design software will handle this for you, so you don't have to be a coding guru to do this yourself. GIFs in general, due to their low bit depth, should be avoided. Use PNGs instead if you need one with a transparent background or an animation; PNGs combine everything you'd want from a GIF with the color depth of a JPEG.

Think about how you're organizing your web site - make sure that every page has a way to get back to the site map or home page, because people will mostly hit your web site from a search engine result. While it's tempting to do massively search engine optimized landing pages to get your page ranks up there, remember you're writing for human beings first, not for web spiders. It doesn't matter how search engine optimized the text is if people read three sentences that are utter gibberish and hit the back button.

Web designing in context of Design

Be it any type of designing, design means a creation, fashioning, execution, or construction according to plan. A plan to execute another plan and it also means the result of that plan. Thus it is very essential that these plans and designing follow their own principles and consist of their own elements. Web designing forms an important part in the process of web promoting or web hosting. Be it any part of world, web designing in Vancouver or Kelowna web hosting, web designing has to follow certain codes of principles and the elements have to be encompassed. How do the normal principles and elements of design fit into the web designing agenda?

Elements

The elements are the most important parts of the design as they constitute the building blocks. The more powerful web pages can be got from these elements as they are what your pages are. The important elements are shape, texture, color, lines and line works. Special care must be taken in planning and organizing the elements.

Principles

The principles are helpful in putting the elements of web design in a track and make it more presentable. The more effective page can be given with the greater principles. The important things to be considered are the balance of the elements, contrast, emphasis, repetition and the proximity to put them altogether. If these fundamentals of designing are applied to the web designing, web hosting in Kelowna or Vancouver web designing or any web hosting with web designing can go places.

Search Engine Friendly Flash Web Design

If you are looking to bring your website to life and have a site that demands attention, I recommend you look into adding some Flash to your site. Flash web design brings movement to an otherwise dull looking static site.

Millions of web sites now use Flash to explain products, showcase services, and entertain your web visitor. The power of flash on your site can not be underestimated as a very useful feature on your site.

Flash improves the interactivity of the webpage. Because it is much easier to create interactive buttons on Flash, users will be able to interact with your site much more than without it. Flash is the key to creating a positive impression on your prospective consumer or client, a Flash website design breathes new life into your online communications. Therefore, be it your web page graphics or your animated logo designs, the unique power and flexibility of Flash website designis sure to enhance your online presence.

But there are some disadvantages of using an all flash website from search engines perspective. Flash is not considered to be search engine friendly and search engines can not index the content of a Flash file. So it becomes nearly impossible, to optimize an all Flash website.

So if you are designing a new site from scratch and if you want it to rank on search engines then try not to use an all Flash website. Instead of having one large Flash file always use separate smaller Flash files and then include these files on each individual HTML page. Always use text links to link to different sections of your site, instead of including links in Flash.

The Best Ways to Make your Site User and Web Friendly

For all of the technical jargon associated with the internet and web design, there is one word that trumps them all in importance and it's a word that should be familiar with everyone. That word is usability. Usability is important to create Web sites that your customers will want to return to.

If no one can use your site, then no one will bother staying on it. Your website needs to be user friendly or you won't see much of a return on your investment. To keep in simple, no matter what type of subject your website is about, it needs to be designed as user-centered.

Users need to be considered constantly throughout the website design process. The best approach to take is to a proactive approach to the design process and takes care of any potential issues before it's too late. While there are a good number of specific suggestions, here are some quick tips you can use to create a site that is useful for your visitors.

HTML - There are some version-specific elements of HTML which will cause some problems for some of visitors of your site. The only way for your site to be completely user friendly is to limit it to HTML 1.0. It won't be for few years to come until the majority of web surfers will be able to access new technology due to old computer hardware and other factors. The best recommendation is to avoid beta-level software and technology until it has been established for at least a full year.

Download Speed - More and more people are gaining access to the internet but that doesn't mean, they're connection are as fast or as good as yours. This means don't go making a site that is bigger and fancier that it actually needs to be. All of the latest studies show that the speed of a page downloads ranks as a sites most important factor. A potential customer will lose interest in your page after ten seconds no matter what the topic is and if they interested or not.

The layout of the page - The importance of the layout of the page is similar to that of its content. They are pretty much intertwined. You could have written some of the greatest content ever, but if the layout of on the page is sloppy and disjointed, no one is going to try and read it. They'll just find another website that is easier to navigate. Keep your pages clean and simple. If your page doesn't need certain elements on it, then remove them. If it functions the same after removing a function, do the same and take it out.

Content - All web design experts will agree that content is king. It's what Google sees when they index your site and more importantly it's what your site's visitors will see. Your web site needs to be about something that you feel passionate about and your visitors should too. Show that excitement on every one of your pages. If your readers see that excitement and feel the same way, they'll keep coming back.

Colors - Colors can and will play an important part of your website, much more than you may realize. They affect the usability of your Web site. There are some colors which look great together, and then there are other colors that are almost so painful to look at that you need to click away before you burn your eyes.

Think a Web Site Can't Do Anything for You? Think Again

Back in the day, about the 1990s, web sites were once the domain of high-tech, high expense companies. Especially during the "dot-com" boom, many companies were spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on domain names, plus millions of dollars on web site development. They were trying to carve out their own niche in the "new economy."

If you think this is still true, think again. The Web continues to grow and expand exponentially, with new Web addresses being added every day. Because of this, large and small businesses are now playing together on a somewhat level playing field. You can't tell just from the web site how large or small a company is, although some national and international brands still have clout, because of recognition.

If you do it right, your web site should be easy to maintain. It's best to do this right before you start, rather than having to completely revamp your web site once it's up and running; not only is this a headache to have to revamp a functioning web site when you're trying to run a business, but you'll also create a lot of headaches and mess for yourself to clean up that don't have to be. Today, you also don't need top-notch HTML skills or other coding skills to keep abreast of your business and keep your site completely updated. Content management systems like forums and weblogs let you type text just like you would with an e-mail message.

More than ever, a web site gives you both national and international exposure. In effect, it's a brochure or flyer that costs you very little to distribute to interested parties. Unlike print media, you can update it almost instantly, with a touch of a button or click of a mouse. No longer do you need to print out 30,000 of them and mail them out, incurring postage expenses as well as printing expenses in the process, only to have them shortly become obsolete. No, today, it costs you almost nothing to keep your business advertisement -- your web site -- completely updated almost effortlessly.

More than just a substitute for print media, your web site is a place where you can interact with your customers, and you can even create a community with them. Customers who give and receive feedback on your web site are much more likely to refer other customers to your company. They drive business to your web site through word-of-mouth advertising by referring people they know; those people come in, see an active community, and decide that your company and your products are worth investigating.

Your web site can also become an active point of sale, if you have the right set up. Although Amazon.com is the pioneer in web sales, every company can easily handle Web-based transactions. Sometimes the transactions will take more technical know-how than others, but all are relatively simple.

In short, if you're looking to grow your business, you need to let your customers know about your products and about you. Your web site can be the most effective way to reach and grow your customer base, as inexpensively as possible.

Logo Design - It's Not About Your Personal Choice

As an entrepreneur, one of the most important business decisions is choosing the right logo design. Irrespective of the fact whether a logo is designed by some hired professionals or is an in-house development of the organization, certain crucial and important decisions has to be made. Whatever happens, an entrepreneur will always want his logo to work well for his company. And it is true that a logo can prove to be an important factor for the success of a business or organization.

However, many entrepreneurs make the mistake of choosing their logo on the basis of their personal preferences. But personal preferences should rather be left alone when deciding on the right logo design for a company.

While designing a logo certain factors should be kept in mind. And these factors become more important than personal preferences or likings. It would decide whether the logo would actually work well enough for the company and help spread its visual branding successfully and smoothly. Ideally, a logo design should be made keeping the company's clients and competitors in mind. So, what's the best way to decide on your logo design?

Firstly, brand definition. A company's brand definition should ideally guide the design of all the brand identity materials, starting with the logo. However, the most important things to determine before designing your logo will be:

1. Who you are, what are your business' mission, vision and purpose?

2. What you do, i.e. what are the products and services that you deliver?

3. What makes you different from your competition?

4. Who you look to cater, or your target audience.

Then segregate your full brand definition down to the most essential elements. Logos are small. Creating a clean and straightforward logo is essential to making sure that it communicates well. Most brand definitions are complex. Trying to pack too many details into a logo can create a mess.

Keep your brand definition in mind as you design your logo. Think about every choice you make and how it affects your logo's icon, font choice and color scheme. A logo has to connect with the clients. The design and overall feel of the logo has to communicate to them. Their perspective is more important.

Thus a logo designed on the basis of personal choice, liking or preference cannot carry off the company's mission statement to the clients. So the best practice is always to think from the client's perspective while choosing a logo design. These steps would not allow a logo design that would always be according to the personal choice or likings of an entrepreneur. But they are essential for having a successful logo and a successful company.

How to Create a Website in 3 Easy Steps

Designing a website is not that difficult and it is actually fun! I have been teaching website design for a couple of years and my students are thrilled with exploring this creative outlet. Some of learning web site design for fun while most of the are quite serious about starting an Internet business.

In order to get starting creating you web page, I would recommend that you first think about the goal of your website and what you want to accomplish. I know it is difficult to take the time upfront to think about such mundane things like purpose. Believe me, this will save you time in the long run. (This topic is covered in another article.)

The next step is to learn HTML. I know you are going to cringe at this recommendation. But hold on. It really is fairly simple to learn. This is one of the languages used to create a website. Your browser then interprets the language and displays what was written. It will just take a couple of hours of your time. (I have some great resources listed that will help you learn HTML is less than two hours!)

HTML is just a simple language used to tell a browser what a website looks like. Most of us have had some type of language in high school. Learning Spanish or French is much more difficult than learning Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML)!

One of the things I love about HTML is it is very logical and follows a set of simple rules. Each task you want performed has a certain tag. In that tag you can usually specify some of the attributes of the tag. For instance, in the font tag you can tell the browser what style of of font, the size, and the color you want. If you don't get what you want, you look at the rules and find out which one you broke. Fix the error and you will get your desired look.

I'm afraid that I digress. (I have written an ebook on HTML and have several resources available for you on my website.) After you learn HTML, I recommend that you use an editor to actually make your website. Using an editor is like creating a Microsoft Word document. It is a WYSIWYG format - What You See Is What You Get. The editor makes designing a web page extremely easy.

You may be asking, "Then why learn HTML?" That is a valid question. Knowing HTML has saved me hours of time. Once you learn HTML you will find yourself fixing problems, diagnosing error by looking at the code. If you learn the HTML first then you will know it and have it at you disposal any time you need it.

Back to editors. There are many HTML editors. The most popular are Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft Frontpage. I have used both and like both. There are also several free editors. The one I use in my classes is NVu. It is a great editor and my students have picked it up quickly. If you are going to create a lot of websites, then I would recommend investing in Dreamweaver or Frontpage.

There are several different web page builders available with your hosting. These are nice to get started quickly. However, you will find that there are severe limitations. I recommend that you not go this route. You will save time in the long run.

There you have it - three easy steps to designing your website! Step 1: Purpose Step 2: Learn HTML Step 3: Design a website with an editor

You can learn this on your own but I recommend: take a class, learn it fast, be online in no time!

Productive web design for your business

Any business looking for a web designer will find there is a wide range of web development companies providing website development services. Simply go to your favourite search engine (google.co.uk) and type in "web design" and the results will show hundreds and thousands of website development providers. The web design industry is very competitive, so how do you find a web design company which not only offers good design but also provides a website which has a the ability to achieve good ranking on search engines?

Listed below are some important website design tips:

Meta Tag Data - There are three types of meta tag data:

Title Tag - The title tag is important for website design search engine optimisation. The title tag is used to form a part of a search engine result. It is important to keep your title tag short but also try to list the most common keywords in your web page title tag. Each web page on your website can contain a different title tag.

Keyword Tag - The keyword tag contains words or phrases that potential visitors will use in search engines to find your business website. The main text on your website should also contain these keywords. Each page on your website should focus on a specfic keyword and the text information on this page should reflect against this chosen keyword.

Description Tag - The description tag is normally placed under your title tag and should contain a short description about your business. This is an opportunity for you to sell your products and services to your potential clients. Search engines use the description tag to form a basic description of your business in search results. It is advisable to keep your description tag short and straight to the point. Get your message about your business within the first two lines of description text.

Some other useful tips:

Keep your website up to date. Old information contained on your website is OK but new information is always more informative. A good idea to is build an archive system so you can keep old information but also provide your visitors with up to date information.

Do not write an essay about your business. Try to get your text information concise and informative. Split your information in to pages if you need to have a lot of text information on your website about your business.

Make sure your website is visually appealing. In most cases what you like in terms of design and not be the same for your client base. Get you designer to create an example home page as a graphic file and have the file sent to via email. Send this file to at least 20 - 30 other people, some related to your business and people outside of your business and get some feedback. Based on the feedback you will be in a better position to direct your designer / developer.

Change the images on your website at least once a every three months. If you use images on your website try to update them with new images every three months. People who visit your website often will see that you are keeping your website up to date. Use the alt tag to add a text description of the image, the is an opportunity to add more keywords to the main body of your website.

Website Content Management System (CMS)

A Website Content Management System is simple terms allows you to update your website without the assistance of a web designer / developer. Initially you will require the assistance of a web developer to create the Website Content Management System for you business, but after this process is complete you should have the ability to add new pages, add images, update text information, change your meta tag data and re-structure your website navigation if required. Many other functions (features) can be added to your Content Management Systems but these function (features) will be determined by your development specification (requirements).

A Website Content Management System is useful only if you are going to update your website on a frequent basis or require more control over the information on your website. You will also be saving cost in the long term as you will not be reliant on a web developer / designer to update your website on your behalf. In the sort term Website Content management Systems are more expensive than standard plain html based websites but the advantage to you is the ability to grow your website yourself. Most ecommerce solution use some type of Content management Systems for example giving you the ability to add new categories and products to your ecommerce store. Content Management Systems can be used in website development in many different ways and are not secluded to ecommerce stores.

Website Content management Systems also give you the ability to identify administrators and set content management roles, in simple terms you can give specific privileges to different members of staff within your organisation and restrict members of staff from specific Content Management functions which do not apply to their role.

In some cases your Website Content management Systems can have the ability to archive information. Creating an archive system is an effective way of retaining information for internal or external reference. A good example would be a portfolio of clients which you have worked with, once your client project is complete, you can add informative information to an archive system allowing internal or external users to view this information, enabling a user to see what you have completed within the remits of your business.

A Content Management Systems normally consists of a user website, a database to store information and a secure control panel allowing to you update the information on the database. Content from the database is used to compile the information displayed on your website. The information on the database is accessed or manipulated using a programming language. In simple terms you are updating the database and your website is displaying content from the database to form your website pages. This type of system is also know as a three tier website application:

Data Tier - This is where your website information is stored. Application Tier - This is where information is processed. Client Tier - This is where information is displayed.

There are many different technologies available which enable a Website Content management System to be created. The most cost effective solution is a combination of the following technologies:

Mysql Database - An open source database application Linux Server - An open source operating system PHP Programming - An open source programming language

You can find hundreds and thousands of websites on the internet using the above technologies. There are many alternatives to the above technologies such as Microsoft based technologies, but these tend to be more expensive to maintain and develop.

It is recommend before you commission a web development company to create a Website Content Management System, you first find out what technologies the web development company will be using and if these technologies are cost effective.

Basic steps for creating a good website

The first point you should consider is understanding what information your website should contain. In most cases your website should have at least the following basic structure:

Home page - An introduction to your business, services and / or products About page - An overview of your business, future vision Services / Product page - An overview of your services / products Contact page - Provide all your business contact information, address, email, telephone, fax

There are many other web pages which you can add to your website but these pages will be determined by the type of business you own. Below are examples of other pages you may require for your website:

Resources page - A resource page can be used to structure information in to categories, this information can then be downloaded by website users. You can also charge a fee for users which want to obtain this information. In most cases free download information is a very useful method of driving web traffic to your website. The resources can be in different formats such as a word document, pdf document, video clip, audio clip, graphic file, power point presentation, there are many formats which can be used to deliver information to your website users. Informative download information is a great way to advertise your business, especially if the information your provide is free, this is also know as viral marketing.

Image gallery page - An image gallery page is a good way to visually present your business, for example if you are a property developer you may want to show before and after images of a property development or if your are a photographer you may want to compile a gallery of images in to categories which would provide a good method of demonstrating your work.

Payment processing page - A basic payment processing page can be a useful mechanism for accepting payments from your clients. More advanced payment processing is know as ecommerce. There are many payment processing providers such as PayPal or Google checkout. In most cases these payment processing providers will only charge a fee if a payment is made. Most banking payment processing has a monthly fee so you should consider and research which is the most cost effective for your business.

The above pages listed are only a few example of how you can create more interacting on your website. A good way to find out what else you can achieve is to simply look at what your competitors are doing.

Listed below are some of the most common requirements for an effective website:

Meta Tag Data - meta tag data is used by search engines to find and correctly catalog your website. It is very important that the meta tag data you add to your website is relevant to your business. There are three main types of meta tag data:

Title Tag - The title tag is important for website design search engine optimisation. The title tag is used to form a part of a search engine result. It is important to keep your title tag short but also try to list the most common keywords in your web page title tag. Each web page on your website can contain a different title tag.

Keyword Tag - The keyword tag contains words or phrases that potential visitors will use in search engines to find your business website. The main text on your website should also contain these keywords. Each page on your website should focus on a specific keyword and the text information on this page should reflect against this chosen keyword.

Fonts - Keep your fonts (text type) simple. I would recommend Verdana or Arial font types. These fonts are easy and clear to read. Avoid fancy fonts which are difficult to read as this will only distract a user from the key information you are emphasising.

Colours - Use high contrast colour combinations on your website, for example if your background is a light colour use a dark colour for the text. I would recommend an off white colour for the background and a dark grey (all most black) colour for the text.

Compress your images - When adding images to your website it is advisable to compress the images using a graphic application. Your images should be set to 72dpi (dots per inch) for displaying on a computer monitor, high resolutions on a website pages will not affect the quality of the image being displayed. You should save your images using , .jpg or .gif format which are the most common format used when adding images to your website. .jpg images are suitable for complex images and .gif are suitable for simple banner of title images.

Designing your website template - In most cases it is advisable to design your website for 15" monitor which use an 800 x 600 screen resolution. Although you may have a large screen monitor, many of your website visitors may have a smaller screen size, by creating a website based on a smaller resolution you will be giving all your website users access to a website which can be viewed on any monitor size. In some cases you may require more space for your website so I higher resolution design will be required, this is OK but you should always consider the end user (website visitor) before making this decision. It is also possible to create a website which dynamically changes size based on the monitor size of the user but you normally loose a lot of control over the content layout when creating such a solution.

The above comments are only the basic considerations you should make before developing a website. Below I have listed some informative websites where you can obtain more information. A good web development company will provide free consultancy at the initial stages of developing your website.

Web Design and Development: Ask for a Portfolio

For most people, the area of web design and development is not something that they are used to dealing with. But in today's world, if you do not have a website, you are often times looked at as an outsider. This is especially true if you own a business. Fortunately, the web design and development industry is not one that is being held back. In fact, this is one industry that is growing at a record pace. And when it comes down to it, there is no reason to think that this growth is going to stop.

When it comes to hiring a company to assist you with web design and development, you need to ask for a portfolio; there is no way of getting around this. If you do not know what type of work a company has done in the past, how do you know that they will be able to help you with your project? The answer is you won't!

Collecting portfolios from several web design and development companies is not as hard as it sounds. In fact, if you ask for this, you will more than likely get what you want within a few hours. After all, these companies want to earn your business, so they are going to be prompt with sending you a portfolio.

A web design and development portfolio will usually consist of past projects that a company has worked on. In most cases, you will be able to simply check out the live websites of their past projects. This will make it easy for you to decide what company is going to give you the best results.

There is no reason that you should hire a web design and development company before you see a portfolio. Many individuals and businesses end up hiring on reputation alone, and in the end they feel as if they were duped. But when you look over a portfolio first, it is safe to say that this will not happen to you.

Software: Your Two Options

Are you in the market for new software? If so, you should know that there are two options to choose from. Generally speaking, you can purchase pre-packaged software, or you can opt to hire somebody who can create a custom application for you. As you can imagine, both ways of buying software offer some level of benefits and disadvantages. As the consumer, you need to know the differences between the two, and then decide which one will help you to reach your goals. First off, pre-packaged software is exactly what it sounds like. These programs are available to the general public, and are not tailored to suit your needs. The nice thing about buying this type of software is that you know that it works, and there is plenty of information available on it. Not to mention the fact that pre-packaged software is not going to cost nearly as much as having a custom application developed. On the down side of things, since you are buying only what is available, you may not be able to get everything that you want.

On the other side of things, custom software applications also offer many benefits. The biggest one being that you will be able to tell your developer exactly what you are looking for. When you buy custom software, it will be made to suit your exact needs. But as mentioned above, to get what you want, you are going to have to pay a premium price. Is this something that you are willing to do?

There is nothing wrong with using both types of software. When it comes down to it, there are many times when buying off the shelf is the way to go. This will help to save you money, while still knowing what you are getting. But when you need specific action and results, you need to consider a custom software application.

Using your own minisites to sell more books by watching minisite videos

Minisites are as good as your store front (with your sales copy as your salesman in print) to sell more of your books and information products. That's why minisites are the most popular type of sites in the web. All you need to sell more of your books is a glorified sales letter minisites. The minisite where you have the image of your book cover with sales letter and a framing on the sides. Have a good headline to introduce your book as an attention-getting mechanism. Your minisite(s) may or may not have header panel.

By the way, you don't need complicated websites, bells, whistle, gingles, flash animations and other distracting child-plays. Search engines only index words very well and find it difficult indexing flash animations and complex graphics slows them down. Therefore, minisites are your best bet. Most authors find this out the hard way.

For instance Jim Edwards who wrote several ebooks and has sold thousands online dismantled a 40 page content site when he discovered this truth. He shrank his site to one focused and simple minisite and book sales jumped to 1000% over night. That's the amazing power of minisites. They make a lot of money in autopilot.

Therefore, using your own customized inexpensive, simple but powerful minisites to sell your ebooks, books or courses is the smart way to go. You can sell more of your books by setting up several minisites for your information product or product line.

What most writers who don't have their own tailor-made minisites do is to direct their prospects to Amazon.com or other online booksellers. The problem is that your book is listed with other titles and chances are that the customer may end up buying someone's book instead of yours. In sales, it is known that a confused mind hardly buys. Whenever you overwhelm the brain with too many choices, it shuts down. This may shut down your sales too, making you lose book sales.

You will run into three problems if you must design your own customized minisite to sell your book, ebook or resale right packages:

* You have to figure out how to design your own minisite by yourself. Usually you have to buy the softwares with steep learning curve and technical jargons. If you must setup and run sales page minisites on your own, you would have done it by now. Besides, mastering dreamweaver, and frontpage have steep learning curve you cannot navigate without help.

* Another alternative is to hire a freelance web designer to setup your minisite for you. Yes, many gurus advise you to go to: Rentacoder.com, Elance.com or Scritplance.com where you waste your time searching for a good web designer and place a bid to find one that fits. The cost for a good webdesigner is from $100 to $500 per minisite (multiple it by the number if you want several minisites) and you are not sure of what you are getting and nothing is guaranteed at the end of the day. This fly-by-night web designers don't care about your success once they are done with you. (in case you site falls apart, there is no technical support). Trust me it can happen and I have experienced it all. Before now, this minisite solution was what I recommended to authors and writers.

* The third alternative advise to authors and writers is to use minisite design templates to setup their book sales page minisites. Using generic templates is a sure way to lose respect because everybody and their dog is using the same thing and it is all over the net. Besides, good minisite templates cost you from $15 to $45 and the free ones are even worse with all kinds of advertising that may require clean-up. Other problems with using minisite templates are that they have limited use and flexibility.

The best, cost-effective, and innovative way is to use free softwares that still give you professional-looking minisites. And I will show you where to download the free softwares. No, it is not dreamweaver or frontpage. Those cost money like I said earlier. They don't require reading complicated technical manual and my minisite video CD-Rom will show you step-by-step what to do, how, why and where to get the free softwares to code your minisites. You can even design several minisites without restrictions. This will save you time, shorten your learning curve by 50% and save you money. Besides learning how to put up your own minisite is a skill that you need as a web business owner. Acquiring minisite design skill is like riding a bicycle; once you learn it, it lives with you forever.

Setting up and running your own minisites is not only necessary for your books or ebooks and information product, minisites are also good for squeeze pages for your newsletter, landing page for your affilliate links or Adwords advertising test pages. The use of minisites are multifaceted if you must make money online. Many article directories now have restrictions where they don't let you insert your Clickbank or other affiliate links on your author's resource box. Therefore, learning how to set up your own sales letter minisites is even more necessary now than before.

Creating Websites

Creating Websites

I hate creating websites but being an affiliate marketer it is a necessary part of my business. It's not that I don't have anything to say or don't know what to say. It's more that I am not an artistic type and I struggle to make it look "pretty"

As silly as it may sound, you can have the best message in the world but very little people will even take the time to read it if your site is not appealing to the eye. Know what I mean?

I'm not good at HTML either. I guess I've always been to lazy to learn so that leaves me with using most of the "low tech" site creation tools that simply do not give the look one might desire. I know you've seen them.

I put it to the test and against my best judgement I paid a pro to create a site for me and I then created a site using the same content but with my "limited" artistic skills. To make it a fair assessment I launched identical marketing campaigns on lessor search engines that received relatively the same amount of traffic.

I couldn't use Google because one site would rank higher than the other and I couldn't use Google vs Yahoo or MSN. The results would simply not be comparable in either of these cases.

So I ran my campaigns for 3 days straight then stopped and ran them again for 3 days. The site by the professional yielded sales almost 3 times that of the site I created.

Well know that I am armed with this website creation information what am I going to do with it? Pay a pro every time I want to build a site?

Not a shot, I'm way to cheap for that.

A fellow marketer suggested I try a new tool he was using for Creating Websites.

He advised that it was free to use and not some cheesy 30,60,90 day demo that would then cost hundreds to continue using. What the heck, free is in my price range so i'll give it a shot.

It took me a little bit to figure the whole thing out but I was able to create an entire site with 20 pages full of content, RSS Feeds & post in my AdSense code all in about an hour.

I'm sure glad it worked out because I hate Creating Websites.. Don't you?

Corporate Logo Design

Corporate Logo Design

A corporate logo design is essential in today's corporate world. If used effectively, it will be highly instrumental in building your corporate identity and should successfully exude the company's attitude. The viewers must have some idea about the disposition, character, or fundamental values of your company through your logo. Following certain basic principles can ensure that your corporate logo design is professional easy to remember and creates a great impact on its viewers while successfully expressing the nature of your business.

Go for Professional Logo Designers You might save a few dollars doing your own logo or getting it done from the next door boy who knows the basics of designing but if you are serious about your business you should always go for a professional logo design firm. Your corporate logo is your identity, your customers recognize you by your logo, so the more professional and sophisticated your logo is the better will be your customer's impression about your company.

Though most of the logo design companies charge exorbitant rates to create a corporate logo design but the industry is changing. These days there are companies that offer excellent professional logos for nominal charges ( e.g., corporate logo design

Simplicity - Keep it Simple An ideal corporate logo design should be simple and memorable. Corporate houses spend thousands of dollars to ensure that customers remember them at all point of time and a simple logo is the key to that. Think about the Nike logo, it's simple and memorable--once you see the Swoosh, do you ever need to think twice about the company name?

Colors Colors you use for your corporate logo are a very important factor in your brand establishment. If you already have your corporate colors ask your logo designer to use those colors for the logo. If you don't, suggest the colors that you think might give your prospective clients some idea about the type of business you do. For example, a company working in the fields of forest conservation might like their logo to be in green. At the same time, you also need to consider which colors will go well with your corporate stationeries as well.

Black and White version While emphasizing the colors we must also remember that it is important for a corporate logo to come out well in black and white. A corporate logo design is used in all corporate communications including fax and photocopied document where they will be in black and white and the logo design must be such that it holds the same impact even in black and white.

Minimize Colors this is more important from an economic and usability point of view. Corporate logos are often required to be printed for stationary and corporate literature. Using a one or two spot color logo can save a lot of cost compared to printing a full color logo.

Logo Format It is advisable to always use a vector format for your corporate logo design. A corporate logo may be required to be reproduced at any size for different purposes in the future. A logo design done in vector format can be expanded to any size without any loss of image quality, where as a corporate logo in raster format will loose image quality, if scaled up. Also it is easier to convert a vector logo design to bitmap than vice versa.

If you get a professional logo design firm to do your corporate logo and brief them about these basic tips (most of the knowledgeable firms are well aware of these principles) you are sure to get a satisfactory corporate logo design that would go a long way in helping you establishing your brand.

Use your Logo: Once you are ready with your corporate logo start giving it maximum exposure possible. Not only on your business cards and letterheads but also on your packaging, uniforms, pens and all possible goods should contain your logo. This gives wider exposure to your logo and people gets familiar with the corporate logo much faster. With all these you are on your way to establish your brand. Take leaps with your new corporate logo.

Creating Your Web Site

Creating Your Web Site

By: Lynn Holter

Before talking to the Web Designer of your choice there are a few things you must do. Keep in mind that your website will be created by both yourself and your web designer. It will be a joint effort. You must communicate to your designer exactly what you envision and what you want to accomplish. Remember, this is YOUR site! You own it!

1. Ask yourself why you want a website and what is it you wish to accomplish. 2. Are you selling something? Information? Items you have created? Services? 3. Identify your target market. In other words, whom do you want to sell to?

Things to consider in the layout and design of your page. * Content: This is THE most important aspect of your site. After all, the content is what you want people to see! Be specific. Don't put long paragraphs of text on your pages unless you are selling information or providing instruction. People want to find information quickly and easily. * Graphics: Sites that take a long time to load lose visitors. Don't use large graphics unless you are selling graphics! Your home page needs to load as quickly as possible. Limit Flash and Javascript as well. While both can be attractive, they will ALWAYS slow down your page. * Pop-ups: DO NOT put pop-ups on your site. They annoy everybody! * Color: Limit colors to 3 for the entire site. If possible, use your company colors or the colors you use in your logo. Make them attractive and easy on the eye. Spend some time surfing the web to see what is pleasing to you. * Forms: Provide a contact form that includes your e-mail, phone, fax, and any other information that will make it easy for your visitors to get in touch with you. * About Your Company: Include an "About Us" page on your site. Let people know who you are and exactly what your business is all about. Keep it simple and to the point. * Tag Line: Come up with a catchy tag-line for the home page or use the one you already have. People tend to recognize your company by your tag-line. Example: Sears tag-line is - "Good Life. Great Price". * Search Engine Optimization: Make your site search engine friendly by choosing keywords that will lead visitors to your site. Use your keywords in text form as much as possible on your pages - especially the Home Page!

Keyword Density

Keyword Density

Keyword density is an indicator of the number of times the selected keyword appears in the web page. But mind you, keywords shouldn't be over used, but should be just sufficient enough to appear at important places.

If you repeat your keywords with every other word on every line, then your site will probably be rejected as an artificial site or spam site.

Keyword density is always expressed as a percentage of the total word content on a given web page.

Suppose you have 100 words on your webpage (not including HMTL code used for writing the web page), and you use a certain keyword for five times in the content. The keyword density on that page is got by simply dividing the total number of keywords, by the total number of words that appear on your web page. So here it is 5 divided by 100 = .05. Because keyword density is a percentage of the total word count on the page, multiply the above by 100, that is 0.05 x 100 = 5%

The accepted standard for a keyword density is between 3% and 5%, to get recognized by the search engines and you should never exceed it.

Remember, that this rule applies to every page on your site. It also applies to not just to one keyword but also a set of keywords that relates to a different product or service. The keyword density should always be between 3% and 5%. Simple steps to check the density:

Copy and paste the content from an individual web page into a word-processing software program like Word or Word Perfect.

Go to the 'Edit' menu and click 'Select All'. Now go to the 'Tools' menu and select 'Word Count'. Write down the total number of words in the page.

Now select the 'Find' function on the 'Edit' menu. Go to the 'Replace' tab and type in the keyword you want to find. 'Replace' that word with the same word, so you don't change the text.

When you complete the replace function, the system will provide a count of the words you replaced. That gives the number of times you have used the keyword in that page.

Using the total word count for the page and the total number of keywords you can now calculate the keyword density.

Harnessing web 2.0 development

World has come closer and communication has become faster with the harnessing web 2.0, I won't be wrong if I say 'Network made easy with web 2.0'.

O'Reilly Media in 2003 coined the term Web 2.0 to emphasis a post-dot-com generation of sites and service that use web as platform. Web 2.0 is the new generation of web with new set of principles of web-based communities and hosted services for all its users. Web 2.0 is vanquishing the internet world because of its flexibility, usability and impetus that is driving various social communities. Web 2.0 is quintessential internet online solution that has given web 1.0 a shove on one side and has foster mashups, banner Ads, wikis, file sharing, photo sharing, podcasts and technologies like weblogs, social bookmarking, wikis, podcasts, RSS feeds on other side; these technologies have gained more visibility, ultimately improving interactivity of web. We are observing major shift in web usage, new development paradigm has refined the overall process letting users to benefit from software continuously being refined without waiting for upgraded version or SDLC. Different applications that operate well off online (del.icio.us, Skype, dodgeball) and offline (Flickr, Google Maps) have also helped to improve effectiveness of web. Transition of Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 has consolidated different segments of web and now a website is not mere a website promoting its product and services but a good source of information exchange where visitors can maintain their own blogs and communities and share more information.

This new generation technology is synonymous for public communities, cloverleaf exchange of information, open communication; all these speak of its cosmopolitan nature in the market place and are serving web application to end users.

Broaden your web horizon harnessing web 2.0, for your help web is available as an open source where you can use and reuse the market and resources and have individual control, openly conversing and communicating, sharing your resources and views, and easily creating new corporate paradigm using readily available spontaneous modular elements. We also find remarkable growth in web economy as a result of web 2.0. Web 2.0 is data driven platform developed by independent developers and their participation, it creates network effects and very simple business paradigms driven by content and service unification.

The technical demography of traffic statistics shows increased figures from social media sites and rising trends in deployment of web 2.0 technologies. Recent statistics shows that social networking as the most popular tool, with 19% of companies having invested in it, followed by podcasts (17%), blogs (16%), RSS (14%), wikis (13%), and mashups (4%). When we sum up companies planning to invest in the tools, the percentages says: social networking (37%), RSS (35%), podcasts (35%), wikis (33%), blogs (32%), and mashups (21%).

In a nutshell I would say, Web 2.0 is a holistic approach that includes software for servers, content assimilation, standard based browser, rules for messaging, rich-interactive applications, and extensive use of folksonomies, all start with information inculcation, its management, storage and dissemination.

Why do you need a validated website?

A lot of clients ask why they need their 'already working perfectly well' website validated. Below is a brief guide to try and answer this in a clear and simple way.

Firstly we should explain what is meant by a validated website.

Put simply, validation is the act of writing and designing a website in as 'clean' a way as possible and testing it against industry standards. It makes use of cascading style sheets (CSS) to format the page layout and text and also cleans up any 'loose coding' which could otherwise cause problems.

For a further description we refer to an excerpt from the wc3 website as they are the last word when it comes to validation!

Validation is a process of checking your documents against a formal Standard, such as those published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for HTML and XML-derived Web document types. It serves a similar purpose to spell checking and proofreading for grammar and syntax, but is much more precise and reliable than any of those processes because it is dealing with precisely-specified machine languages, not with nebulously-defined human natural language.

The Benefits of Validating your website.

1) Compatibility

When your website code is not validated you are running the risk of your site displaying unpredictably in different browsers. For example, Internet Explorer is more forgiving and likely to internally fix small amounts of 'loose coding' whereas stricter browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Safari will display a page as it is coded. Validation makes the code uniform and means you will not have an unprofessional and unpredictable looking website or risk alienating certain users who don't use Internet Explorer!

2) Search Engine Optimisation

A website that is 'clean' is far easier for the search engines (Google, Yahoo etc) to 'read through' and index. The easier they can do this the easier it is for them to find the real meat of your site i.e the content. The other point to make here is that if your site isn't validated it is possible for search engines to place greater emphasis on the wrong part of your code and your site could therefore be missing out on being found for the most appropriate searches *

3) Accessibility

Validating a site requires the use of many accessibility techniques such as the use of ALT tag on images. Steps such as these make your site more readable for those users who are vision, motor skilled or cognitively impaired. Validation makes the site readable as it allows aids such as screen readers to read through your site correctly. Although validation is not in any way a guarantee that your site is accessible, it is a huge leap towards this and far superior to an unvalidated site.

4) Faster loading

Conventional websites made use of tables and an extensive amount of tags for formatting both the page structure and content. The use of CSS separates the structure from the content and gives the browsers less code to trawl through before they can successfully render the page. Validation also aids the browser in displaying the site faster as there is no 'loose coding' for the browser to get tangled up in or waste time trying to 'fix'.

So where does this leave you?

Firstly you might like to check your current site for validation (see the steps below).

Secondly, decide whether validation is something that you feel you should be concerned with but please bear in mind that you now have a legal obligation to have an accessible website *

Thirdly, enlist the help of a professional SEO company to review your website and carry out necessary alterations. In some cases you may be cheaper having your website completely rebuilt rather than trying to fix the current errors but don't let this put you off. Look upon it as an opportunity to spruce up your existing site and start afresh!

How to validate your website using Validation Tools:

1. Go to the W3C validator website 2. Type in the URL of your website 3. Hit the check button 4. You will be presented with a list of results. If your site validates then you can relax for now if it doesn't then maybe you want to enlist in the help of a professional search engine optimisation company such as ourselves!

How to Find the Right Web Design Company for Your Project?

In today's cyber-oriented world, you will rarely find a household or person who does not have computer or access to the Internet.Everywhere you look - people are connected. Therefore, it is needless to say that if your intent on having or running a successful online business or website, choosing a professional web design company is crucial. You are depending on them to create an image for you that will make or break your business.

You have less then 8 seconds to create an impression on your visitor when visiting your website. Be very selective when it comes time to choose the web firm for your website design. Here are a few guidelines and pointers to help you choose the right designers: 1. First and foremost: Do they have a portfolio? Make sure they have some experience under their belts and unless you want to be a designer's test subject, make sure they have some experience behind them. 2. Are the designer's skills are advanced enough to cater to any type of business? Look through the portfolio for variety. Do their client's websites all look similar in format and structure? Make sure you are paying for a custom web design service, not a cheap template. 3. How reasonable are their prices? Make sure you get what you pay for and if you are on a budget, that the designer you choose won't exceed it. But it is also important to insure you put plan for extras and have a plan to continually invest into the website's construction. Your website is going to the link between you and your customers, so make sure it is the best it can be. If you can't afford for everything you feel your website should have - then wait. Don't settle for a low end website.

4. Do they take a personal and friendly approach?

Although this article can seem like a no-brainer to some, many companies will often run into difficulties and conflicts within their design process. These are simple yet often overlooked steps, and can be the difference between a rough or smooth design process. Keep this list in mind when looking for a web designer and you should find the right one to create your website

XSitePro: Can I Convert My Website in Under 30 Days?

No time to spare. My current, expensive, webhosting contract was due to expire and now I was in a bind. XSitePro was my only hope in getting out of that bind. I had heard XSitePro was good - which is why I bought it; that with it I could create a professional looking website quickly and easily. How would it deliver on that promise?

My Free Computer Consultant website (http://www.FreeComputerConsultant.com) was being hosted by a company that used propietary database technology to actually build my website with data that I entered into a block-builder style tool, so I couldn't just FTP to the site, download, then re-upload to my new host.

The web hosting renewal was only a month away and June is one of my busiest times of the year. I had to convert my website to standard html code, over 150 pages, in about 4 weeks. XSitePro was simple to install, and I watched a couple of short video tutorials provided on their website.

I didn't have time to learn something new. The quick tutorials were all I needed.

Time to get started.

Building my new site with XSitePro turned out to be a snap. I copy and pasted text, quickly formatted it with XSitePro's easy to use interface, and only touched raw HTML code when I wanted something special.

It turns out that XSitePro has much of the power of DreamWeaver, only it costs just a fraction of what DreamWeaver costs, and unlike DreamWeaver is very easy to use.

The Basics.

With XSitePro, you can quickly and easily create the look and feel of your website and experiment with different color schemes.

Adding pages is a breeze; use html if you want, but I use the designer mode which allows me to just type and format using toolbars similar to Word or any other word processor. Several boilerplate pages allow you to add pages like privacy statement, contact page, and a links page.

The menu options are 100% customizable and easy to use. I just checked a box and now I have a breadcrumb trail as well. You choose where your menus show up and how they look. This so easy! DreamWeaver is a nightmare to create menus that work; the other webhost I was using was totally inflexible.

Want to add adsense to your site? XSitePro has wizards for doing that; it's no big deal. Want to put ads in a column down the side, no problem doing that either. Now you can make money with your website traffic.

How about a Google sitemap for your website? XSitePro does it for you, and leads you through the process of submitting to Google for quick indexing of your website.

If you get into a jam, XSitePro offers both technical support and a user forum to get help and get your questions answered. Chances are, though, you won't need it.

Get it online, quick.

Ever had trouble with an ftp program to actually publish you website? You won't have that trouble with XSitePro. There is a place to enter the details needed, then select publish. It really is that easy.

XSitePro gives you full control over all aspects of the website. Header, footer, left & right panel, page footer. If you make a change to any of these items, it is automatically changed throughout your entire site. If you need a page to be different, you check a box and tell it to ignore page formatting.

Scripts are a cinch, too. Have site statistics or google code that you want on every page? My previous web host required me to put that code in EACH PAGE! XSitePro has a special place for scripts like that, or put it in the header or footer - YOUR choice.

I would tell you that I love XSitePro and highly recommend it. But my guess is that you have already figured that out.

And the website? Done in 3 weeks; time to spare!

I am fully convinced that there is no other web development tool out there, at any price, that would have done what XSitePro did; and it is one of the least expensive of the tools available.

Ways to Keep Your Online Visitors Coming Back

Every day there are multitudes of new websites added to the internet and each one of them wants a place in the spotlight. Some websites have the right idea of what will make them popular and some have lost the plot. There is a method to be found in all the madness, and although there are no exact rules to follow in creating good websites, there are a few guidelines to keep your online visitors coming back to your site.

In a recent poll conducted by YouGov, web users spoke about their online experiences; what type of websites they found interesting and useful and what type of websites they would never click back to. The results were as follows:

Most users pointed out that functionality played a much bigger role than design in their favourite websites. Ease of navigation was rated highly - no surprise there. A fancy Flash website may seem appealing at first, but if it doesn't take users where they want to be and if the user doesn't find what they are searching for, then what's the point? Navigation and content first, fancy graphics second!

59% of the users rated security as an important factor when browsing the internet. This is especially important when banking details or credit card numbers are being used for online transactions. There is still a widespread mistrust for online banking or buying, so in order to get your client to trust your site you should take the necessary measures to protect your clients.

Smart searching was also ranked as a priority. A search engine or a shopping directory with an accurate search function was highly rated on the user poll. Just as in face-to-face communication, users don't like to be taken in circles when they are looking for something. Web users rated speed at 62% relevancy in terms of their online experience. Slow home page loading has proven to be the number one reason users left a website immediately. Relevance of information is another major factor in determining what makes a good website. Users are looking for good quality, relevant information and if they are not going to find it on your website, they are going to move on.

3 Steps to improve your google rankings

Getting The Most Traffic To Your Website

By: Craig Schoen

Have you ever wondered what makes one website so highly successful, and others non-existent? For most people in small business, getting traffic to their web site can bring their customer service and profits to the next level. How do you do this? Thankfully for all you small business owners, there is a solution.

I have grown up with computers, used them through school, work and to keep in touch. I am most often on Google, searching for information or products that I need. Then through word of mouth I heard of the business practice called SEO (Search Engine Optimization). It sounded too good to be true until I thought, "How does one site get to the top of Google's rankings, while others stay at the bottom?" With a little research I found that in fact there is a way to get your website to the top of Google and Yahoo search engines, without any magic.

Then I followed these steps to get up to speed and get my employer's website on its way to be at the top of Google's search engine.

1. Read the book SEO Made Easy by: Brad Callen - This offered an easy-to-read layout of everything one would need to improve traffic through their website. This includes optimizing on page and off page to improve search engine rankings.

2. Do more research - Look at web pages that do well in Google's rankings and come up first. What do they do? Who are they linked to? How could you implement similar changes in your website?

3. Make the changes - Improving traffic through your website can not happen over night. Put in an hour or two a day doing the things SEO Made Easy talks about. Most importantly have fun and create new ways to improve traffic, it is your business we're talking about here.

To close I would like to say this whole process also improves the focus of the online product you offer to ensure you reach the customers you want. This increases your ability to build the e commerce relationships that will increase sales and bring your company to the next level.

This results in IT strategies that are application or integration-focused. This results in many "one-off" applications that may or may not be integrated into the existing architecture. Problems surface when mergers and acquisitions introduce new software platforms and methodology to an already fragmented architecture, but IT rarely has sufficient resources to complete business systems integration. As a result, IT often ends up deploying multiple systems that perform the same tasks within an enterprise or business unit.
